You pulled the hit. Heart rate's up, chat's going nuts, and now the little voice starts: "Am I about to hit big?" If the answer might be yes, what you do in the next thirty seconds matters more than most collectors realize. Here's how to get a card from pack to PSA-ready without dinging it — or killing the vibe of the rip.
Step 1: Sleeve it the second you pull it
Most grading damage doesn't happen in the mail. It happens on your desk — a thumbnail on the corner, a slide across a dusty surface, a stack of commons landing on top of it. The fix is simple: penny sleeve first, everything else after.
The trick is having the sleeve ready. Fumbling through a bag mid-rip is exactly how cards end up sitting exposed while you dig. That's the whole reason we built The Rip Buddy — 250 penny sleeves upright and within arm's reach, so the sleeve is in your hand before the adrenaline wears off.
Step 2: Semi-rigid card saver, not a toploader
Here's the one that trips up new submitters: PSA asks for semi-rigid holders (like Card Savers), not toploaders, for standard submissions. Toploaders are great for storage and shipping sold cards, but graders need to get the card out easily and safely — that's what the semi-rigid flex is for.
The move: penny sleeve, then slide the sleeved card into the semi-rigid holder. Hold the holder slightly open and push slowly — never force it. If you're prepping submissions regularly, the Grading Prep Edition keeps a stack of semi-rigids upright and dust-free next to your sleeves, so the whole motion is one reach.
Step 3: Inspect before you submit
Grading fees are real money, so give every candidate an honest look first:
- Corners — check all four under good light
- Edges — tilt the card and look for whitening
- Surface — angle it against the light for print lines and scratches
- Centering — compare the borders top/bottom and left/right
Be honest with yourself here. We can't promise you a grade — nobody can — but a five-minute inspection saves a lot of fees on cards that were never going to hit the number you wanted.
Step 4: Keep the queue clean until submission day
Cards waiting for submission should live upright, dust-free, and away from the chaos of your next rip. A clean rip station isn't just about looks — dust and desk clutter are how surface scratches happen. Keep supplies vertical and hits separated from commons, and your submission stack stays exactly as mint as the day you pulled it.
The short version
Sleeve instantly. Semi-rigid for PSA, not toploaders. Inspect before you pay. Keep the queue clean. That's it — grading prep isn't complicated, it just rewards being ready.
For the love of the rip. 🔥
